Paphiopedilum lowii is one of a handful of epiphytic species in the genus Paphiopedilum. It is widespread throughout peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo and Sulawesi where it grows at 250 to 1600 m in seasonally wet rainforests.

Paphiopedilum glanduliferum is a tropical slipper orchid that grows at 0 to 200 m in the crevices of limestone cliffs in New Guinea.

Many tropical Asiatic slipper orchids are pollinated by flies. Many have spots, bumps, hairs, carrion colors and foul odors that attract flies seeking a food source. P. glanduliferum is pollinated by hoverflies (Syrphidae) which normally lay their eggs on aphids. The glandular hairs in the center of the flower may mimic an aphid colony.

Nepenthes adnata is a tropical pitcher plant endemic to Sumatra where it grows on mossy sandstone cliff faces above the Tjampo River.

Insects seeking nectar from glands below the pitcher’s rim lose their footing and fall into a pool of acid and digestive enzymes in the bottom of the pitcher. Most struggle until they drown. A few manage to swim to the sides and succeed in scaling the wall into a zone of digestive glands, only to become hopelessly mired in sticky juice.
